Chapter 18

“At least I’m sticking to one man and not having a different man every month.”

-Alisha Wright

The sound of the doorbell woke me. I looked at the clock, it was two in the evening. I must have dosed off after I laid Ashley down for her nap. Her therapist had worn her out, but she wasn’t the only one worn out. I was exhausted from looking after Ashley twenty-four seven and taking care of Lil’ E and his father.

Dealing with Eric as he continually abused me mentally and physically was taking its toll on my mind and body. At night I didn’t get much rest because I had to make sure Ashley was comfortable or she wouldn’t sleep through the night. And during the day I had to make sure that my son was taken care of. I had no more energy left for anything, especially not for myself.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“It’s me and Tyra,” Brittany spoke from the other side of the door.

“Hey y’all,” I said in a cheerful voice as I let them in.

I was very happy to see my besties. I needed some company to get my mind right, I’d been behind closed doors nearly going crazy by myself since the accident.

Eric hadn’t been any help to say the least. He’d left everything to me while he did what he did best, disappeared. My mom had been wonderful, she would help out with Ashley and she would also take Lil’ E home with her for days at a time. Eric would give my mom an attitude whenever she came by, he thought she was invading our privacy. I explained to him that if he would help out a little more she wouldn’t need to be over as much. But that conversation led to a heated argument.

Ashley’s father flew in from New York and showed up at the hospital. As usual he started trouble. He blamed me for the accident and that caused him and Eric to get into it. The doctors had to put Eric out even though Ashley’s father started it. But because Eric was not her biological father, he was the one that had to leave.

“How is Ashley doing?” Brittany asked as she and Tyra gave me a hug and took a seat on the couch.

“She’s doing a little better, making progress every day. She’s remembering how to pronounce more words,” I said, smiling with joy.

“That’s real good news. I brought her a teddy bear, I hope she likes it,” Tyra said.

“She’ll love it. She’s asleep right now, but if you want you can go and put it next to her so when she wakes up she will see it.”

“Nah, I’ll just let you give it to her, I don’t want to wake her,” Tyra spoke bashfully.

“What is she doing sleeping? That girl never liked taking naps, not even as a baby,” Brittany said with a smile on her face, trying to lighten up the conversation.

“Ain’t that the truth,” I said with a chuckle. “Her therapist just left, she works my baby to death.
